Messy Christmas

by Andrew Joseph Connell

/

about

Forgive the out-of-tune guitar. I began recording this song as a demo, with the intentions of returning later to add layers of vocals and instrumentation. In the end, that just didn't seem to align with the heart of this song. So here it is, one live take, authentically raw, just like the stable that night in Bethlehem. I pray it meets you right where you are this Christmas.

"How thankful I am that when God became man He did not choose to become a man of iron nerves; that would not have helped weaklings like you and me nearly so much" - C.S. Lewis

lyrics

The journey was awfully tough
As if being pregnant wasn’t hard enough
A hundred miles of burning dust
It was a messy Christmas

The labor was so intense
She felt the curse just like God had said
It wasn’t the last time they’d crown his head
It was a messy Christmas

Well it wasn’t Hollywood, and it wasn’t picturesque
But our Maker is so good, to undertake our mess
What would you prefer? A king of iron nerve?
Well you can have your wish, I’ll take the baby in the dirt.

The cattle shared the stall
And all they had was some swaddling cloth
The ground was caked in blood and straw
It was a messy Christmas

And it wasn’t what we thought, No it wasn’t on our list
But the power of our God, gets perfected in weakness
Well what would you prefer? A palace made of pearl?
Well you can have your wish, I’ll take the baby in the dirt.

Herod was never one
To share his power or be outdone
In the streets, Judah mourned her sons
It was a messy Christmas

And it wasn’t all done up, like tinsel on the tree
For He is a man of sorrows, acquainted with our grief
But what would you prefer? A king of iron nerve?
Well you can have your wish, I’ll take the baby in the dirt.

Andrew Joseph Connell Newark, Delaware

Andrew Joseph Connell writes songs for the King who saves and sanctifies. His roots are in Delaware, the Small Wonder, where he serves his local church. Each year he seems unable to escape the wonder of the incarnation and so much of his catalog fits into the unconventional Christmas category. He prays his songs are like a glass before your eye, that sets your gaze on Jesus. ... more
