True Light 02:30
And the true light has come And His light gives light to everyone To all who receive His love He gives the right to become Children

Memories were all we had to live on Like manna on the ground Just enough to keep us going everyday As we waited for a sound And the prophets all ran dry Like the Jordan during drought How long would you hide your face away And leave us with these doubts Now after all these years When we thought you’d finished speaking Here, Your Word revealed In the silence breaking And I’m just like Zechariah was Finding it tough to form belief But You’re not slack in keeping promises Neither are you slow of speech But I’m just like Zechariah was Finding it hard to comprehend But You’re not slack in keeping promises You know the onset from the end And all You do is perfection Now after all these years When we thought you’d finished speaking Hear, Your Word revealed In the silence breaking

Well I’d heard stories of Moses’ face all glowing bright On the mountain top when You passed your glory by And I thought No one could see you and keep their life But here I am Staring God right in the eyes And they look a bit like mine In the wilderness You were with us all the time As a cloud by day, a flaming pillar in the night And I thought You didn’t dwell in houses made by man But here I am Holding the Maker in my hands When the temple came, everything had to be just right In the Holy Place, steady streams of sacrifice And I thought That was as close as we could get But here I am With You sleeping on my chest And I did not expect this child to be so heavy Yahweh in the flesh, all the weight of glory How could you contain the One who knows no limit In this tiny babe, the hope of all creation

Well all the trees are bare now It gets darker everyday But it’s in the unexpected places Where Your power is displayed Up from the stump of Jesse There comes a stem Behold the Branch of blessing Our righteousness When the ground is thick with frost Feels like nothing here could grow You’re reviving everything that is lost And You fill our lives with hope Up from the stump of Jesse There comes a stem Behold the Branch of blessing Our righteousness When your people feel cut off And there’re no grape on the vine Still the Lord will be our strength and song For You make us tread the heights Up from the stump of Jesse There comes a stem Behold the Branch of blessing Our righteousness The root and seed of David Bright morning star Receive the fruit of your labor Receive our hearts

When God sought a king, for His people of old He went to the fields to find him A shepherd was he With his crook and his lute And a following flock behind him O love of the sheep, o joy of the lute The sling and the stone for battle A shepherd was king The giant was naught And the enemy driven like cattle When God looked to tell of His goodwill to men And the Shepherd-King’s Son whom He gave them To shepherds made meek A caring for sheep He told of a Christ sent to save them O love of the sheep, o watch in the night The glory, the message, the choir Twas shepherds who saw Their King in the straw And returned with their hearts all on fire When Christ thought to tell, of His love to the world He said to the throng before Him The Good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep And away to the cross they bore him O love of the sheep, o blood sweat of prayer O Man on the cross, God-forsaken A Shepherd has gone To defend all alone The sheepfold, by death overtaken When God sought a King for His people for aye He went to the grave to find Him A Shepherd came back With death dead in His grasp And a following flock behind Him O Love of the sheep, o Life from the dead O Strength for the faint and the fearing A Shepherd is King And His kingdom will come And the day of His coming is nearing

Burning Star 04:34
Burning, burning Wondrous star is burning Lead the way to where my Lord is Yearning, yearning Oh my heart is yearning Bring me close to where my Lord is And the wisest of men Are fools to the world But I'll be undignified If it honors You Lord Burning, burning Wondrous star is burning Lead the way to where my Lord is Yearning, yearning Oh my heart is yearning Bring me close to where my Lord is And the closer I get The more I’m convinced That to live in Your presence Is the sweetest of gifts Burning, burning Wondrous star is burning Lead the way to where my Lord is Yearning, yearning Oh my heart is yearning Bring me close to where my Lord is I've found the One my soul loves You are the One my soul loves

about

Maybe you’re thinking, “Another Christmas album? This guy is stuck in a creative rut”. I guess that’s possible. Or maybe it’s what happens when God peels back the veil and lets you peer into the mystery of the Word becoming flesh and making His dwelling among us. Get too close to the flame, and you’ll catch fire. I pray He keeps me burning.

For context, I spent a lot of nights over the past two years rocking a baby boy to sleep in my arms. Any parent knows, there’s an inexpressible wonder that overtakes you when you cradle another human life in your hands. But if that child is God, the wonder is infinitely magnified. It’s beyond remarkable to think that the Lord Almighty bundled up His immeasurable glory, placed it in the seed of a woman, and took on the form of a child. Night after night I’d hold my son up to my shoulder and get lost pondering the love and majesty of Jesus’ decision to enter our midst to save us. The incarnation might feel simply like a pit stop on the journey, but it’s the firstfruit of every preceding promise. My heart just can’t quite get over it. I’m not sure I’d ever want to.

Thanks for listening this year.

about

Andrew Joseph Connell Newark, Delaware

Andrew Joseph Connell writes songs for the King who saves and sanctifies. His roots are in Delaware, the Small Wonder, where he serves his local church. Each year he seems unable to escape the wonder of the incarnation and so much of his catalog fits into the unconventional Christmas category. He prays his songs are like a glass before your eye, that sets your gaze on Jesus. ... more
